Backlink exchange is a strategy under the topic of search engine optimization (SEO).
Websites agree to link to one another, in an attempt to boost their search rankings.
If you want to rank high on Google, having an authoritative backlink profile is essential.
Search engines consider backlinks as a vote of confidence in your website’s content.
The idea is to be part of a network of related websites that can all benefit from shared audiences.
A backlink is a link on one website that sends people from one web page to a page on another website.
Usually done with text that reads “click here”.
Once the user clicks, they are directed to another page on a website.
Anchor text is the visible words or phrases of a keyword in a link that you click.
A link can read “click here”, and then once you click, you are directed somewhere. That text you click on is called anchor text.
No need to read, sit back and listen. NotebookLM made it easy.
We will under no circumstances distribute your information nor spam you.
This excerpt is from Google’s documentation about Link spam:
If one reads the definition of what Google deems “Link spam”, it is clear that you cannot make a backlink a requirement as part of some sort of transactional agreement. There is a big difference between requirement and deserving.
If you deserve a link because you have a product or service that the linker likes, a link to that product or service based on “merit” is both “natural” and “not excessive.”
Backlink exchange involves two or more websites agreeing to link to one another.
It creates reciprocal connections that signal relevance and authority to search engines.
Here are some key considerations:
Do it slow and steady, focus on relevance, and don’t overdo it, as in, try and spread it out over the course of time.
Your main priority in a backlink exchange should be natural and descriptive anchor text, strategically chosen for purpose.
Here are some best practices:
Anchor Text Selection
Use the keyword you want to rank for in the anchor text and point to the web page most relevant to that keyword. Use it sparingly—once, maximum twice.
Choosing Pages to Link To:
Focus on linking to pages that offer value and are contextually relevant to the content. For instance, connect to cornerstone articles, in-depth guides, or other related blog posts that deepen the reader’s understanding of the topic.
Number of Links per Blog Page
If you link to your top-level domain once or twice and to some pages with relevant keywords once or twice, you are good. Longer posts might warrant 2 or 3 more links, but do not overdo it.
In my opinion, friends and family are your best bet.
They want to see you succeed, and believe in your authority on a topic. You have street cred with them.
Try to find people in your circle that has website, and how their website can relate to what you do.
Let’s say you sell female clothes, and your uncle has a dental practice. He can create a blog post about how staff must look professional and stylish, and for this reason, he shops at your online clothing store.
Be creative, and tie the relevance as close as you can.
Professional connections can open up a good avenue for backlink exchange.
If you have the authority of an industry, this can go a long way.
Speak to the members if the clubs you belong to like like MENSA or groups such as Round Table, as well as industry associations where members share a common industry, but aren’t direct competitors. As an example, a software company can blog about the great coffee, atmosphere, and service they receive from the coffee shop down the street.
These connections might emerge from conference interactions or through referrals from trusted service providers relevant to your niche.
While this approach might be less common and sometimes met with skepticism, it offers the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships. Being prepared for a few rejections is part of the process, but forging links within these respected circles can lead to quality backlinks that enhance your credibility, online visibility, and, ultimately, authority.
Online connections represent a dynamic avenue for backlink exchanges.
Without giving it much thought, we interact with people on platforms like Reddit, Discord and even while gaming online.
We sometimes build genuine relationships within these online connections.
Keep your eyes open for opportunities to collaborate with like-minded individuals. Even website admins—through direct interaction via WhatsApp buttons on websites.
Focused groups on social media platforms can broaden your network, allowing you to engage with peers who share similar interests and industry insights.
But fair warning. It’s important to exercise caution. While some websites may boast high domain authority, they might also be associated with “toxic” practices, like buying low-quality backlinks. Only pursue collaborations with connections you trust.
Edward Strum recently featured u/WebsiteCatalyst on a YouTube video, where he talked about a reddit post I created about reddit SEO. In the video, he mentions that I am a top contributor on ther/SEO subreddit, so I have a little street cred, and, he goes on to say that having a diverse backlink profile protects against negative SEO. Backlink exchanges tick all the boxes to protect agains negative SEO.

Having a few well-crafted paragraphs and blog pages on standby is crucial when engaging with potential link partners.
This “hot potato” strategy ensures you never miss an opportunity; always have content ready to go, complete with eye-catching images, clearly defined headers, and precise anchor texts that indicate where the links should point. Your linking partner should not have to think about it.
By preparing these assets in advance, you can quickly share well-thought-out content with your connections, ensuring that the opportunity’s momentum doesn’t fade.
Act fast—if you keep your linker waiting, they might lose interest and move on.
Not all backlinks are created equal. Backlink value is critical to your overall SEO health. The higher the quality of the backlink, the better.
With tools like ahrefs, SEMRUSH and Moz, one can get an idea of what a backlink is “worth”. The higher the number, the better.
A link from a high-authority website is significantly more valuable than one from a low-authority domain.
Strike a balance in having a diverse backlink profile for your website. For example, do not only have backlinks from websites with a Domain Authority higher than 40. This will not naturally happen in the “wild.”
Also, try to get backlinks from websites with a similar Domain Authority to yours. Although we are tempted to only go for the higher Domain Authority scores, attempt to have a range of websites with different authority scores link to your website.
The value of the backlink is in this order
One-way linking is the most valuable type of backlink.
It serves as the strongest, independent vote of confidence from one site to another.
Imagine backlinks as a speed limit, if you go way over the speed limit and get caught, you are screwed. But if you consistently go over the speed limit without getting caught, you win.
You should aim for these singular, unidirectional links because they consistently demonstrate genuine recognition, not tit for tat.
When you offer a service in exchange for a backlink, executed in a merited and natural way, you don’t even have to be worried about getting caught, as you are deserving of your backlink.
Think about a service or an offering that you can put out in the market that will be worth it, such that people you know will link to you.
Website Squadron as an example are masters of SEO Reports created with Looker Studio. We will gladly build a world-class Looker Studio report for anyone who is willing to link to us, and the link, should speak about how great the report is.
We win because we get street cred on the Internet, and the report consumer wins, because he does not have to pay for an expensive report developer. Win-Win.
A-B-C link exchanges are one way websites trade links while trying to avoid the “footprint” of a direct swap.
It is a backlink strategy that involves three or more websites, where the link doesn’t come straight back to the site that gave it out. Site B links to site A, and in return, site A links out to site C. A different property owned by the same person who runs B.
This setup differs from a reciprocal link exchange because the links don’t point directly back and forth between the same two domains. If site C links back to site B, closing the loop, that’s generally called a round-robin or circular link scheme.
The trade-offs: search engines classify arranged link exchanges, including A-B-C setups, as link schemes under their spam policies, and search engines have gotten reasonably good at spotting the patterns.
The only long-term play is to earn links naturally and on merit, and if you’re doing that already, you mother swearword don’t really need the scheme in the first place.
Nothing prevents you from asking someone to look at your website, ask if you deserve a link, or if you can get a link. Make a person in your network aware of your website.
Backlink trade and backlink exchange are used interchangeably.
People with websites can exchange, trade, or swap website links. But there is no official definition. If you ask an LLM, they will give you all sorts of technical differences, but the LLMs just read from some guy’s site.
At Website Squadron, we often say that we will work for backlinks of biltong, and “don’t thank me, link to me”.
A backlink is currency, and people trade them for sure. Whether it is with other links, cash, labor or time, backlinks do get traded.
Reciprocal linking is when two websites directly exchange links.
Amateur move as far as backlink exchange strategy is concerned.
It provides the most basic level of endorsement, driving the least link equity between the two websites. This should be a last resort strategy.
Reciprocal linking is not the most natural link exchange strategy, and Google warns against its overuse. This warning clearly means they are looking for it.
Incorporating one-way linking or ABC linking offers the most dynamic link equity distribution. These approaches are more natural, helping to ensure that each site receives an independent vote of confidence from a different source. As a result, these methods are more favored for enhancing your website’s overall SEO profile and credibility.
A backlink exchange network is a great idea. Get to know the people and their websites first, before you willy-nilly link around.
A good network is on reddit as an example, a subreddit called r/backlinkXchange. This network of linkers are responsible and careful about linking, and if they are not, tight MOD control will block them from the community.
You can also create your own backlink exchange community, on a platform like skool for example. You only needs a few contacts that has access to websites, and this will dramatically increase your linking profile.
There are websites available like backlink exchange dot org, but these can get very spammy very quickly.
The bulk of the websites that are listed there are most likely link farms, and even if they are not, they are just a link or 2 away of becoming one.
Backlink exchange, when approached gradually and naturally, can boost your website’s authority by diversifying your link profile and connecting you with relevant partners.
If these backlink exchanges appear forced or overly reciprocal, there are higher risks. That is why the ABC linking strategy reduces the risk. The key takeaway here is the word “reciprocal”.
On the reward side, natural exchanges blend seamlessly with organic links, building trust with search engines and driving steady referral traffic.
Conversely, if too many links are exchanged in a short period or with low-quality sites, search algorithms may raise red flags, potentially leading to penalties that diminish your rankings.
Ultimately, the key is to maintain a balanced, measured approach—investing in quality over quantity ensures that the long-term benefits outweigh the risks.
Ethical backlink building involves naturally earning links rather than trading or buying them, which is in line with Google’s guidelines.
While buying backlinks or orchestrating reciprocal exchanges solely for SEO gains is discouraged and can even lead to penalties, developing genuine relationships within your niche encourages natural linking.
When websites link to one another because they share quality content or complementary expertise, the resulting network boosts your credibility and complies with search engine policies. And we want to be complying, right?
This approach is far more sustainable than forced tactics like guest posting solely for backlinks or purchasing links, as it builds a diverse and authentic link profile that benefits your long-term SEO performance.
Doing a backlink exchange will make your conscience clear, as you did not buy or trade in backlinks.
To build effective backlinks in SEO, it’s essential to focus on authentic relationship-building rather than only metrics like Domain Authority (DA) or PageRank in SEO.
Establish genuine connections by partnering with local businesses you know and trust. Collaborate on joint campaigns that offer mutual benefits and consider hosting community events, such as coffee meetups or tech gatherings, to strengthen relationships.
Sharing valuable content like case studies and promotions can also enhance connections.
If you prioritize ethical backlink exchanges and building authority through meaningful partnerships, you’ll create links that not only align with Google’s preferences but also drive valuable, targeted traffic.
Toxic backlinks are links from low-quality, spammy, or irrelevant sites that can damage your website’s credibility and rankings. They are pretty easy to spot. The domain has nothing to do with your domain, the anchor text is most likely the domain name, and the folder structure is not natural.
To avoid attracting these harmful domains, it’s crucial to build your backlink profile organically by creating high-quality content and fostering genuine relationships within your industry. If you do not have SEO tools to help you analyze the toxicity of domains, ask a friend who has these tools. Or even better, ask the linker themselves.
Always avoid buying backlinks or obtaining links from sources that have a history of purchasing them, as these are often associated with toxic linking practices and can trigger search engine penalties.
Focus on earning natural links from reputable, relevant websites that add value to your audience, ensuring that every link strengthens your site’s authority rather than undermining it.
Who does not want high authority backlinks?
Website Squadron often gets in touch with website owners with whose industry we do not have much in common. We could not do a backlink exchange, but that does not mean that you could not.
You and your website/s might be perfectly aligned with those.
Get in touch with us, and we will liaise with our connections. We might be able to hook you up.
Go to our FAQ page and fill in our contact form, and we’ll let you know the moment someone with merit in your industry contacts us.
We connect with these kinds of websites
Industry relevance (example: landscaping and construction)
Visual inspection of the site was good (example: What the Supp, HomeTee)
Similar industries, products or services
Nothing bought
Good backlink profile
Non-competition
Varied and branded anchor texts (example: Dynamine Pulver 10g | Heißhunger Support 60 Kapseln | Protein Pulver 200g)
Unlike organic SEO, where any backlink from a high-authority site can help your rankings, local SEO depends on relevance, specifically, relevance to your location and your industry.
With local link building, the strength of a linking website on a global scale is less important than how connected it is to your area and your niche.
For example, a link from a nearby plumber, a local charity, or a regional industry blog can often do more for your Google Maps ranking than a link from a major site like Forbes.
These locally relevant links send a strong signal to Google that says, “This business is trusted here, by others in the same community.”
That is why local link building requires its own strategy. The process can take time, but solutions such as local link building strategies and services from Help An SEO Out can make it easier.
Exchanging backlinks with your peers is a sustainable and ethical link-building strategy.
It’s essential that the backlink is a dofollow link—only these pass the valuable “link juice” that boosts your website’s authority.
Consider that, any link you create yourself holds no real backlink value. The real value comes from links that naturally originate from reputable, external sources.
Focusing on earning backlinks from high-quality, relevant websites, you not only enhance your website’s credibility and rankings but also adhere to ethical SEO practices.
This natural approach is a valid long-term strategy for sustainably improving your website’s authority while complying with search engine guidelines.

We look at merit and organic linking as our primary deciding factors.
Google’s official statement is that this is a violation of their policy.
This does not, however, stop people from doing it, and doing it successfully.
The official stance of Website Squadron is that we will never buy or promote the buying of backlinks.
If you know the person and believe in their product or service, you can link to them.
Again, if it is organic, natural, based on merit, and not an attempt to game the system, it is ethical.
For ease of use, we use ahrefs backlink checker.
There is also a nice tool that looks better than ahref’s tool, called SEO Review Tools Valuable Backlinks Checker.
