Think of PageRank as digital currency. Some even call it “link juice”, and others will go so far as to say that it is irrelevant in SEO today.
When two contextual pages “exchange” links, each one pockets fresh authority and fresh readers.
Done right, cross-page reciprocal backlinks can be the quiet catalyst that tips your article into the spotlight.
Reciprocal cross-page linking, when done thoughtfully, can pass a modest share of PageRank between two pages of different websites.
The practice of reciprocal linking is known to have zero value. But, there is a but.
There is a case to be made that doing it does add some value, because data from large backlink studies shows that many high-ranking pages participate in at least a few mutual links.
We will focus on how to do it right, for maximum effect, if you do it.
To be clear, there is no better way to get keywords for SEO than using the compact keywords method by Edward Strum. Edward noticed this post, so feel free to listen to him rather than read it.
A reciprocal backlink is a two way link exchange. Page A on Site A links to Page B on Site B, while some other page on Site B links back to a different page on Site A.
Each link is editorially placed within content that is topically related, allowing PageRank to flow in both directions.
The critical difference however is, you do NOT link to the TLD (Top Level Domain), you only link to pages.
No mutual linking happens between pages as well as the TLDs.
Measured PageRank flow.
Each link still counts as a vote in the PageRank graph, so both pages gain incremental authority.
Contextual relevance.
When the anchor text and surrounding copy match the target topic, both pages gain semantic signals that can reinforce query relevance.
Referral traffic.
Readers who trust one article are likely to click through to the complementary resource.
Relationship building.
Genuine content collaboration strengthens partnerships between sites that share audiences.
You have complementary expertise that benefits readers of both blogs.
You want to surface a deeper resource that expands on a point made in the first article.
You wish to share audience reach in niches where new authoritative links are scarce.
You refuse to buy backlinks.
You have access to only one website, so I understand that you need backlinks, but nobody seems to want to link to you.
Several industry-scale studies confirm that mutual links are normal and rarely harmful when they arise naturally. No matter what the SEO experts on reddit say…
An Ahrefs analysis of over 100,000 high-ranking pages revealed that nearly half had at least one reciprocal domain-level link.
Smaller lab tests indicate that adding a single contextual backlink can improve the receiving page’s visibility within a few weeks.
However, the uplift is typically slight and depends on the strength of the linking page.
A slight uplift, no matter where you are in the world, is better than no uplift.
We take data privacy very seriously.
Do not automate bulk link exchanges or use link rings. You will eventually get caught by Google. Maybe not this month, perhaps not this year, but you are always just 1 Google Update away from complete traffic destruction.
Avoid swapping sidebar or footer sitewide links; these look manipulative.
Never trade links for payment or require a link as a condition of publishing guest content.
Do not work in keywords randomly that do not seem to have context to the rest of the blog post.
Google calls “excessive” any pattern where a large share of your outbound links are reciprocated by the same sites.
A safe rule is to keep forced exchanges under a few percent of your total external links, and ensure your link profile is dominated by one-way editorial backlinks.
Do not only get cross-page reciprocal backlinks; they should be your last resort strategy. They are not the best, but they are better than nothing.
Ensure the linking paragraph genuinely adds value, and that the anchor text you use to link to the page is relevant to the page you link to. And vice versa.
Summarize the point made on the target page, explain why the reader might want the full detail, then place the link with natural anchor text that describes what they will find.
Ensure that you make use of relevant anchor text. More often than not, backlinks are created with anchor text that the receiving page has zero chances to rank for, or keywords that are not even keywords. Let Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools query data be your guide.
Select pages that address closely related but distinct questions.
Draft new posts that reference the partner article as supporting or extended reading.
Place the link once, inside the body, with descriptive anchor text.
Use rel=”noopener” or rel=”noreferrer” if you open the link in a new tab, but avoid rel=”sponsored” or rel=”ugc” since this is an editorial link.
Keep the number of reciprocal partners low, and focus on quality.
Best is if you write your content, and choose your backlink, and set up the page you want to link to, as well as the anchor text. Then you simply give your backlink partner the entire html code, already justified correctly. The less work the linking partner has to do, the better.
Charles says that Google has claimed reciprocal linking is dead, but a recent leak shows otherwise.
While the spammy footer-swap version from 2005 is indeed ineffective, Google now evaluates such links contextually rather than just structurally.
If two sites link to each other from different relevant articles with genuine value, it’s treated like independent editorial links, reflecting natural web behavior. He notes that exact reciprocals, footer swaps, large-scale exchanges, and identical anchors still get flagged, but moderate, contextual guest post swaps with varied content work well in 2026, passing full link equity without penalties based on his extensive testing.
Google told you reciprocal linking is dead, but the Google leak says otherwise..

"I link to you, you link to me" was one of the first link schemes Google cracked down on. And yes, the spammy footer-swap version from 2005 is absolutely dead.
But the leak revealed something…
A well crafted reciprocal cross-link is not a silver bullet, but it can pass a slice of PageRank, signal topical relevance, and share engaged readers.
You can stay focused on content value, limit exchanges to genuine editorial situations, and your site can capture the modest but real benefits without risking penalties.

It's refreshing to work with an agency that truly understands the latest SEO guidelines and how to implement them effectively with WordPress sites. Their passion for helping clients succeed is evident. We saw impressive results much faster than we had expected. After some mediocre attempts with other providers, we're glad to have found them. We do, but we try to keep it at a minimum.
We prefer ABC linking or 1 way linking.
We build SEO Reports for free for website owners, as a token of our gratitude, they often link to us.
A one way link where your content is so great people link to it.
The problem with this plan however is that website owners know that their backlinks have value, and are therefore reluctant to link outward. Especially not for payment or something in return.
It is human nature.
No. But no link in SEO is risk free.
If Google seriously penalized and stopped sites from creating links, nobody would have all those spammy backlinks linking to us.
